What a fantastic collection, Mark. Are you a fan of Alfred Wainwright, I wonder? I like the fact his 'maps' of the Lake District are so personal and obviously written with much love.Doofushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15368086816490113661noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-876862148358784705.post-65432532144963204502011-10-09T16:23:39.300+01:002011-10-09T16:23:39.300+01:00we have several old maps , framed and hanging on t...we have several old maps , framed and hanging on the walls... old flintshire, north wales.......
a 1820 map of sheffield...

there is something quite wonderful about them,John Going Gentlyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14958171262765033946noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-876862148358784705.post-44620721543591453962011-10-09T15:47:05.123+01:002011-10-09T15:47:05.123+01:00Have you watched the Sue Perkins series on BBC2, T...Have you watched the Sue Perkins series on BBC2, The Natural Navigator? I found it fascinating I have to say and I am sure it will make me think about things I see, lichens and so on, not to mention dung, in more detail!
I love maps...we have several prints of old maps around the reading room/dining room, fascinating to look at maps of places I know, but going back a long way. I like small old books with maps tucked in the back, and even better if they have been written in by previous owners. I am sure you will have more evenings spent going over old places you remember, what a lovely set to have.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-876862148358784705.post-60713170765193252192011-10-08T18:45:07.891+01:002011-10-08T18:45:07.891+01:00I have maps, I cut them into little pieces and glu...I have maps, I cut them into little pieces and glue the pieces onto picture frames. I cannot map read.
I like the way your collection looks, and like the romantic imagery of cycling through remote rural villages, and the utility-free cottage. Just don't ever expect me to map read. Ever.
I remember John Menzies, I'm really starting to feel old now I can say I remember Fine Fare and other long forgotten stores.lucy joyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04863146546863419637noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-876862148358784705.post-92027656850871649622011-10-08T17:31:35.823+01:002011-10-08T17:31:35.823+01:00Maps are strange things. They map the real world but more than anything they map our emotional relationship with the world outside and our memory of it.Stevehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02133900289384226725noreply@blogger.com
